At a recent meeting we discussed the value of making the most of our networking/referral group simply by committing to attend our meetings. Later in the day, I picked up at copy of Jeffrey Gitomer’s book, “The Little Red Book of Selling” and just happened to open the book to the page that lists the 21.5 BEST places to network and thought it applied to our discussion.

I’ll list the top 10. Make sure you check out #4…

1. Chamber of Commerce business events after hours
2. High level Chamber of Commerce event (board of directors, annual dinner, advisors meeting)
3. Any Business Journal event (breakfasts, seminars)
4. A networking club or business organization where solid business contacts belong and participate (Indy Networking Champs!)
5. Someplace where like-mined people belong (college alumni club,
6. Any type of class you take to learn more and make yourself better (Toastmaster’s Dale Carnegie, etc)
7. A civic organization (like Rotary, Kiwanis, Lions Club)
8. Attend a cultural event
9. Get involved with a charity or be a community volunteer
10. Your professional trade association

In the book, Jeffrey Gitomer remarks that Woody Allen says 90% of success is showing up. He goes on to say that he thinks that 90% of success is showing up PREPARED.

So, when you attend a group function like the ones listed above, come prepared by having a great 30-second commercial ready to roll. It’s evidence of your networking skills and exhibits professionalism.

Yes, you definitely get out what you put in. The more active a member is in the group, the more business and referrals you get in return.
